Malwarebytes Partners With StopBadware Non-Profit Organization Dedicated to Making Web Browsing Safer
San Jose, CA – Malwarebytes today announced it is the latest company to join StopBadware, a non-profit group aimed at protecting web users from malicious software. Conceived at Harvard University, the venture focuses on proactively combating badware by educating website hosts and the general public on how to identify and remove the threat from websites spreading viruses, spyware, scareware and other malware.
Malwarebytes will participate in StopBadware’s Partners Forum, a monthly discussion in which the organization’s partner companies share threat intelligence and strategies for combating the spread of badware out in the community. StopBadware research shows that it is common for legitimate websites to be distributing malware without the site owners’ knowledge. Furthermore, many of these site owners have no idea what to do once the malware is discovered. The Forum helps security providers understand how they can assist innocent website owners in preventing and removing badware to protect their site visitors, increasing the safety of the internet as a whole.
Malwarebytes will also participate in StopBadware’s new data sharing initiative as part of the partnership. The newly formed initiative seeks to build a rich database of malware URLs to provide the security community with the independent information needed to take collective anti-malware action. This effort will also help in identifying the scope of these threats for website owners and internet service providers, enabling them to better understand how they can become part of the solution to the problem. Malwarebytes, whose anti-malware software has been downloaded more than 200 million times, joins a host of blue-chip Internet players also supporting the initiative. These include Google, Mozilla, Paypal and Facebook.
